At Sparkbox, our frontend developers and web designers collaborate to create delightful, user-friendly interactions and designs for an even better web. We call this developer/designer partnership The Hammer and The Chisel. The Hammer (often a frontend developer role) structures the HTML and CSS for the overall layout and look and feel of the website, and then The Chisel (often a more web design-minded individual) takes the code to refine and polish it to meet the design vision. Phillip Zastrow and Andrew Spencer describe their take on these web developer roles in this video.
